Scholarships for Graduating Seniors
One of the best investments a community can make is in education. Each spring, Upshur Rural Electric awards scholarships to graduating seniors living at the residence of their parents or legal guardians who are active member-owners of URECC.
In 1999, House Bill 3203 was passed by the Texas Legislature allowing non-profit electric cooperatives to use unclaimed capital credit monies (funds that were previously collected by the Comptroller Offices for the State General Fund) to fund scholarships for students in rural areas. Since the passage of House Bill 3203, Upshur Rural has been able to award over $500,000 in scholarships.
The scholarships may be used for tuition, books and expenses at any accredited university, college, junior college, and technical or trade school. The URECC Board of Directors Scholarship Committee selects the scholarship winners and the recipients will be notified in May.
