We believe the future of our community starts with empowering the next generation. URECC proudly supports leadership development and educational opportunities for high school students through youth-focused initiatives that open doors and build confidence.
Each year, URECC sponsors local high school students to participate in two life-shaping programs:
East Texas Rural Electric Youth Seminar (ETREYS): Ten sophomores and juniors from our service area are selected to attend an all-expenses-paid summer seminar filled with workshops, peer activities, and motivational speakers. Students develop leadership, teamwork, and public speaking skills—and may even earn college scholarships.Since 1965, these programs have helped thousands of Texas students gain confidence, broaden their horizons, and return home as stronger leaders.
Applications for both programs are open annually. Interested in getting your student involved? Visit the ETREYS and Youth Tour pages or contact us directly to learn more. Application forms are available on our Forms & Documents page.
In addition to youth trips, URECC offers scholarships to support local students pursuing higher education. These scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, leadership potential, and a demonstrated commitment to community service. We're proud to invest in the futures of the young men and women who will shape East Texas for years to come.
Beginning in 2024, URECC members have a new opportunity to make a difference right from their monthly bill. Through the Upshur Rural Electric Community Foundation (URECF), members can opt in to round up their electric bill to the nearest dollar, donating an average of just $6 per year.
These micro-donations, pooled together, create a powerful fund used to support nonprofit organizations across URECC's ten-county service area. Every cent goes directly to charitable, educational, and community-focused efforts—decided by a board of directors made up of local members who know the needs of our region best.
For less than $1 a month, your small act of kindness can help address big challenges.

Beyond our foundation efforts, URECC also operates Members Helping Members, a dedicated program focused on assisting co-op members facing short-term financial hardship. Funded entirely through voluntary member contributions, this initiative provides direct bill assistance to help keep the lights on during difficult times.
Whether it's due to medical emergencies, unexpected job loss, or other life challenges, Members Helping Members ensures that those in need receive compassionate, confidential support from their community.
