Downed Power Lines

Never Touch a Power Line or Anything Touching a Power Line.

Downed power lines are usually caused by a broken pole. Poles can break due to age, vehicle impact, or most commonly, when a tree falls on a line, placing extreme weight on the pole.

Often, these downed lines are still energized, even when on the ground. Anything in contact with the line—such as trees, fences, or even the ground—can also become energized and deadly.

Electricity can travel up to 35 feet—or more—through the ground, and 70 feet or more in wet conditions.

If you encounter a downed power line:

  • Stay at least 35 feet away in dry conditions. Keep your distance from the line and anything it’s touching. NOTE! Electricity can travel 70 feet or more in wet conditions.
  • Do not touch anything in contact with the line. Including water or puddles nearby.
  • Call 911. Contact emergency services immediately and warn others to stay away.
