Drone Pilots Enhance URECC Operations

Several URECC employees are now FAA-certified drone pilots, marking an important step forward in the cooperative’s commitment to reliability, safety, and innovation. By incorporating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into daily operations, URECC is enhancing its ability to monitor and maintain the electric system more efficiently than ever before.

These UAVs are strictly used as a tool to monitor the system and support URECC’s mission of delivering the reliable service members have come to expect. With the ability to access hard-to-reach areas quickly and safely, drone technology allows crews to identify potential issues before they become problems. This includes spotting overhanging trees along rights-of-way, as well as identifying infrastructure concerns that may otherwise go unnoticed.

In addition to routine monitoring, UAVs will play a critical role during storm restoration efforts. Following severe weather, drone pilots can quickly assess damage across large areas, helping crews respond faster and restore power more efficiently. This improved visibility allows URECC to better prioritize repairs and reduce outage times for members.

When operating in the field, URECC’s drone pilots will be easily identifiable. They will wear neon yellow safety vests labeled “FAA Certified Drone Pilot – Do Not Disturb” on the back, along with hard hats featuring the URECC logo. Members who see these employees at work are kindly asked to allow them to perform their duties without interruption.

URECC remains dedicated to adopting new technologies that improve service and strengthen system reliability. The addition of FAA-certified drone pilots is another example of how the cooperative continues to invest in tools and training that benefit its membership.

Members with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact URECC’s Member Services team at 903-843-2536. URECC appreciates the continued cooperation and support of its members.
