Electrical Safety Month: Stay Safe Year-Round

Each May, Upshur Rural Electric Co-Op joins utilities across the country in observing Electrical Safety Month, but the truth is that electrical safety deserves attention every single day of the year. Whether it is our line crews working in the field or families at home, everyone has a role in preventing accidents and staying safe around electricity.

Electricity powers nearly every aspect of modern life, yet it remains one of the most overlooked hazards in the home. According to national safety data, thousands of Americans are injured or killed each year due to electrical incidents, many of which could have been avoided with simple precautions. Awareness and small actions can make a big difference.

Keeping your home safe starts with a few key habits:

  • Inspect cords regularly: Check for fraying, cracks, or other damage, and replace any unsafe cords right away.
  • Avoid overloading outlets: Plugging in too many devices can cause overheating and increase the risk of fire.
  • Label circuit breakers: Make sure you know what each breaker controls. In older homes, consider having a professional evaluate your electrical system.
  • Use extension cords properly: Never connect multiple extension cords together or exceed their rated capacity. They are meant for temporary use only.
  • Teach children about electrical safety: Help them understand the dangers of outlets, appliances, and power lines.

At Upshur Rural Electric Co-Op, our commitment goes beyond delivering dependable power. We are dedicated to protecting the well-being of the communities we serve. By staying informed and practicing safe habits, we can all help reduce risks and create safer homes.

Electrical safety is not just a seasonal reminder. It is a responsibility we share every day.
