What to Do if A Power Line Falls on Your Car

If a Power Line Falls on Your Car

If a downed power line comes in contact with your vehicle during a traffic accident or storm, the situation can become extremely dangerous. A single wrong move could be fatal. Electricity seeks a path to the ground—and if you exit the vehicle and touch the ground while still in contact with the car, you could become part of that circuit, leading to electrocution. Follow these life-saving tips if you’re ever in this situation—or witness someone else who is.

If You Are Inside the Vehicle:

  • Do NOT get out of the car.
  • Call 911 immediately and explain the situation.
  • Remain inside until emergency personnel confirm it’s safe.
  • Warn others to stay away from the vehicle.
  • Exit only when responders confirm the power is off.

If you see a downed line nearby—even if it’s not visibly touching your car—follow the same precautions. Electricity can arc (jump) from a line to your vehicle. Stay put until emergency crews give the all-clear.

If the Vehicle is on Fire and You MUST Exit:

  • Open your door carefully.
  • Place your feet together at the base of the door frame.
  • Jump clear of the vehicle with feet together. Do NOT touch the car and ground at the same time.
  • Shuffle away—keeping your feet together—for at least 35 feet.
  • Warn others to stay away until first responders arrive.

Always assume a downed power line is energized and dangerous. Caution saves lives.
