Downed power lines

Downed power lines are usually the result of a broken pole. Poles will break because of age, a vehicle hitting a pole, or most often, a tree on a line and breaking a pole under the extreme weight. Often the line will stillbe charged when it reaches the ground. Not only may the line be deadly, always remember that anything touching the line may also be conductber that anything touching the line may also be conducting electrici ty, making it just as dangerous. This includes the ground, especially if it’ s wet.

HOW TO REPORT AN OUTAGE

  • Text “out” to 855-939-3744

    *** This will work for members with ONE meter associated with their account. If a member has more than one meter on their account. URECC will not be able to distinguish which location is experiencing an outage.

    If you do not already have the URECC SmartHub App, it can be downloaded for Iphone at Apple’s APP store or for Android at the Google Play store.

    Look for this button at the top right corner of the main page. Login to your account to report an outage.

ELECTRICITY CAN TRAVEL UP TO 15 FEET OR MORE THROUGH THE GROUND!

Do not attempt to move a downed power line or anything in contact with the line by using another object such as a broom or stick. Do not use lawn & garden quality rubber gloves either. They are not thick enough to insulate your hands. Even non-conductive materials like wood or cloth, if slightly wet, can conduct electricity and then electrocute you. then electrocute you.

Never touch a power line… or ANYTHING touching a power line.

If you encounter a
downed power line:

  • Stay at least 20 feet away from it.

  • Do not touch ANYTHING touching the line.

  • If there is flooding, the line is in a pool, or even a puddle, do not touch the water. Water is a good conductor of electricity.

  • Call 911, then warn others to stay away, also.

  • If the line falls on your vehicle, do NOT get out. Stay in your car and call 911. Advise others not to touch the vehicle or attempt to move the line.
