Power Tool Safety
Using power tools can make tough jobs easier—but they also come with serious risks if not handled properly. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a weekend DIYer, these safety tips can help prevent accidents and keep your worksite safe.
Safety Tips for Working with Power Tools
- Keep power cords AWAY from tools while you work!
- Switch all tools OFF before connecting them to a power supply.
- Disconnect and lock out the power supply before performing maintenance or adjustments.
- Ensure tools are properly grounded or double-insulated. Grounded tools must use a 3-wire cord with a 3-prong plug, and should be connected to a properly grounded 3-pole outlet.
- Do not bypass the on/off switch by connecting and disconnecting the power cord.
- Do not use electrical equipment in wet or damp areas unless connected to a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter).
- Only operate tools in areas with explosive vapors or gases if the tools are intrinsically safe and you’re following the manufacturer’s safety guidelines.
- Do not clean tools with flammable or toxic solvents.
