The Cooperative Advantage

At Upshur Rural Electric Cooperative, we're more than just a utility provider—we’re your neighbors, partners, and fellow community members. As a not-for-profit, member-owned electric cooperative, URECC exists to serve the people of East Texas, not corporate shareholders.
That fundamental difference is what we call the Cooperative Advantage.

What Makes Us Different

Democratic Member Control

URECC is governed by a board of directors elected by you, our members. This ensures that the decisions we make always reflect the best interests of the community.

Economic Participation

Any revenue beyond our operating costs doesn't go to investors—it comes back to you in the form of capital credits based on how much electricity you've used.

Voluntary Membership

URECC welcomes all who wish to use our services and are willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without discrimination.

Autonomy and Independence

As a local cooperative, we're independently run by members and staff who live right here in East Texas, maintaining control of our own decisions.

Education and Training

We offer safety training, youth programs, and public education initiatives designed to keep everyone empowered and engaged.

Cooperation Among Cooperatives

We're part of a national network of cooperatives that support one another through weather events, best practices, and more.

Concern for Community

At URECC, community is at the heart of everything we do. We support local nonprofits, attend community events, and run programs like Operation Round Up.

You're a Member

When you sign up for service with URECC, you become a member-owner of the cooperative. That means you have a voice in how we operate, and you're entitled to the benefits that come with shared ownership.

We are Part of the Community

Since the beginning, URECC has been dedicated to improving the lives of our members, not only through reliable electric service but through programs that strengthen the heart of East Texas: its people.

A Legacy of Service

Historic URECC facility

Founded in 1937 and energized in 1938 with just 28 miles of power lines, URECC now serves over 35,000 members. From our earliest days—powered by a $140,000 federal loan and the determination to bring electricity to Upshur County—we've grown through service, integrity, and a deep connection to our members.

We are proud to carry on that tradition today. Every decision we make is centered around improving the lives of our members. That's the Cooperative Advantage.
