Ten outstanding high school delegates from across Upshur Rural Electric Cooperative’s service territory were selected to attend the East Texas Rural Electric Youth Seminar (ETREYS), held June 8–12, 2026, at East Texas Baptist University (ETBU).
More than 100 students representing nine additional electric cooperatives gathered for the week-long leadership experience. Throughout ETREYS, delegates strengthened their leadership abilities, heard from inspiring speakers, built lasting friendships, and gained a deeper understanding of the cooperative difference.

Returning to ETREYS in a leadership role this year was Marna Hernandez of Harmony High School, who served as URECC’s Youth Director. Youth Directors are selected from previous ETREYS delegates based on their demonstrated leadership, engagement, and a speech delivered before the entire camp.
“Marna’s growth over the past year has been incredible to witness,” said Chad Wade, URECC Security and Facilities Specialist and ETREYS chaperone. “She arrived at ETREYS 2025 quiet and reserved, but by the end of the week she had formed connections across co-ops and stepped into her confidence. This year, she returned as a poised and passionate leader who truly made an impact on every camper she encountered.”
Wade added that Marna’s influence extended far beyond her own cooperative. “She led with authenticity, uplifted others, and set the tone for what leadership looks like at ETREYS. The example she set will stay with these students long after camp ends.”
Delegates spent the week immersed in a variety of activities designed to build confidence and leadership ability, including interactive workshops, group problem-solving exercises, cooperative learning sessions, and hands-on service opportunities. Each experience helped prepare students with practical skills they can apply in their schools, communities, and future career paths.
The program wrapped up with a recognition ceremony celebrating students who demonstrated outstanding leadership and active participation. Luke Sherman earned the John Dugan $1,000 Scholarship, and Anissa Edmond was awarded the $750 URECC Scholarship for her achievements.
Looking ahead, Evie Helpenstill was selected to return as the 2027 Youth Director, an honor that reflects her leadership and commitment throughout the week. URECC looks forward to seeing her continue to grow and inspire the next group of delegates.
“ETREYS is truly a life-changing experience,” Wade said. “Each year, we watch students step outside their comfort zones, discover their potential, and form connections that last a lifetime. We’re proud to invest in these young leaders and excited to see the positive impact they’ll continue to make in their schools and communities.”
